How to Count Characters and Letters Online (2026)

By Text Toolbox Team · ·

You can count characters, letters, and every other text element instantly with our free Character Counter. Type or paste any text and get a real-time breakdown of total characters, characters without spaces, letters, digits, spaces, and punctuation — each with its own percentage so you know exactly how your text is composed.

What Is a Character Counter?

A character counter analyzes text and reports how many individual units it contains. Every character — letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation marks, tabs, and line breaks — is counted. Unlike a word counter which groups words, a character counter treats each keystroke as a distinct element. This is essential for social media posts (Twitter’s 280-character limit, Instagram’s 2,200-character caption limit), SMS messages (160-character segments), and any form where length is measured in characters rather than words.

How to Use Our Character Counter

  1. Open the Character Counter and type or paste your text into the input area — there is no length limit.
  2. View the instant character breakdown in the stat cards: total characters, characters without spaces, letters, digits, spaces, and punctuation.
  3. Check the Content % and Space % to understand your text density — useful for SEO meta descriptions and ad copy.
  4. Edit your text and watch all stats update in real time, with no server interaction.

FAQ

How is character count different from word count?

A character count measures every individual unit in your text — letters, spaces, punctuation, digits. A word count groups characters into words separated by spaces. Social media limits are almost always based on character count, not word count.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes. Most platforms count spaces as characters. Twitter counts all 280 characters including spaces. Instagram captions include spaces in their 2,200-character limit. Our tool shows both “with spaces” and “without spaces” so you can check against any platform’s rules.

What counts as a punctuation character?

Punctuation includes . , ? ! ; : ” ’ - ( ) [ ] { } < > / @ # $ % ^ & * + = ~ and quotation marks. Our character counter groups all of these under the Punctuation category and shows their total count.

Can I use this for SMS message counting?

Yes. Standard SMS messages are limited to 160 characters (including spaces). Messages longer than 160 characters are split into multiple segments. Paste your message into the tool and check the total character count to see how many SMS segments it will use.

Is my text stored or logged?

No. All processing runs entirely in your browser. The Character Counter never sends, stores, or logs your text — your privacy is guaranteed.
