Frequently Asked Questions About Fence Calculator

How far apart should fence posts be?

Most wood fence posts are spaced 6 to 8 feet apart, with 8 feet being the most common for privacy fences because it suits standard 8 ft rails. Closer spacing (6 ft) makes a sturdier fence in windy areas. Enter your spacing and the calculator counts the posts.

How many pickets do I need?

Divide the fence length by the combined picket width plus gap (in feet) to get pickets per row, then multiply by the number of rails the pickets span. For a butt-joint privacy fence with no gap, divide by the picket width alone. The calculator handles the maths for you.

How many bags of concrete per fence post?

Most fence posts need about one to two 50 lb bags of concrete each, depending on hole size and post width. The calculator estimates bags from your post count for the whole run.

How many rails does a fence need?

Fences up to about 5 ft usually use two rails per section; fences 6 ft and taller use three. The calculator figures rails from your fence length and section count.

Is this fence calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup. All estimates run in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
